ON LOCATION FOR HER FIRST FILM "LEILA" 6/6/01

Chen-Wei had long elaborate dreams. Whenever she would start recounting her dreams I'd have to make coffee and sit down because I knew it would go on for a while. She remembered so much detail. She saw her first film in a dream and with zero experience in film making managed to put together a cast and crew and direct a feature length film. This picture was taken at an interesting location. The town of Locke, California is a ghost town that was build exclusively by the Chinese for the Chinese (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locke,_California). Chinese identity was always a central theme in her films. Locke was where we shot some of the more abstract dream sequences on super 8. Chen-Wei had a real talent for dream sequences and abstract movies and they're often featured in her films. She didn't complete the film but she revisited the footage and started synching the audio in early 2020.
